Intellectual Property Rights are commonly understood as being essential to stimulate innovation and creativity. In that vein, most intellectual property regimes have traditionally focused on IP rights holders as the main agents to ensure the deployment of innovation and creative works. To what extent does the Intellectual Property framework take into account users and consumer interests as part of the equation? Is there a need for a better articulation of consumer interests within the intellectual property regime? Is it not as equally important to a coherent innovation and information policy?

In this thought provoking roundtable, our panelists will approach patent, trade-mark, copyright law, and its interaction with competition law, from the perspective of consumers.

In the past 7 years the WBTshowcase has worked with over 470 emerging companies and technologies transitioning from the lab, the university, and yes even the garage, to the marketplace. If you are ready to expose your research or technology to investors, licensees, and commercialization partners the WBT is the must attend event.

We are often asked, "What is the WBT difference?" Simple, the WBT serves as a partner on your path to commercialization. The competitive selection process is designed to give each applicant feedback on their commercialization opportunity from investors and licensees. Each selected presenter works with a two person mentor team in the weeks leading up to the event walking away with a concise 6-minute investor/licensee oriented presentation and perhaps meets a strategic partner or two along the way. The 2 day event provides each pre-prepped selected presenter with a forum to showcase their emerging research or company directly to investors, licensees, and strategic partners.

The WBT is not designed to showcase technology for technology's sake but to offer a path to the marketplace. The Showcase represents the best vetted emerging technology from around the globe, prepped and ready for business. There is no cost to apply and receive feedback on your commercialization opportunity from investors and licensees. Apply before September 14th and you will receive feedback on your application, which you can then resubmit before the final review by the screening panelists.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009
Time: 2 p.m. Eastern Time
Duration: 60 minutes, followed by a 30 minute Q&A session
Speaker: William Morkel

Testing costs can add considerably to the overall production costs of natural health products. This is particularly true since the implementation of the Natural Health Product Regulations in 2004. Companies are complaining that the new testing requirements are reducing profit margins and placing undesirable strain on day-to-day business operations..

While testing is necessary (and mandatory) to ensure product quality, there are many ways to minimize the testing burden. This course, prepared and delivered by William Morkel (about the speaker), will explore potential means of streamlining your testing program to make it more cost effective while still adhering to regulatory and GMP requirements. William Morkel, Senior Quality Assurance Specialist at dicentra, has fifteen years of experience working in the field of pharmaceutical and natural health products quality assurance and often delivers lectures on GMP issues with Health Canada.

Individuals involved in quality assurance and control, regulatory affairs, purchasing, and business management should all attend this course. Companies importing their products into Canada from a foreign country are particularly encouraged to attend this course.

They’ve shown us their ‘ag’! Yes, they’re judging our first ever “Show us your ‘Ag’!” Photo Contest.

The fields are green with hay bales standing tall in all their glory, the heifers bursting with milk. For some, perhaps your lab has never looked so clean - thanks to the summer maintenance staff research is just waiting to happen. So, dust of your digital camera and take a picture!

Agriculture is everywhere, and we’d love to see your pictures of it

Looking forward to seeing your photos!

In the zinc galvanizing pickling acid application we are converting a waste stream into a value added products, zinc chloride for zinc plating applications and iron bisulphate for waste water treatment. In short, we are taking what is currently deemed a hazardous waste and converting the material into reusable products.

At the same time, we are utilizing a second waste stream generated by hot dip galvanizers to facilitate recovery of these products in a manner that maximizes the economic value of both materials. In the biomass application, we are using the same technology as a recyclable catalyst to facilitate recycle of chemicals designed to break the intermolecular bonds that hold cellulosic biomass together.

As a result, we are able to enhance the separation of the cellulosic biomass into their individual components in addition to converting crystalline (hard packed) cellulose contained in biomass into amorphous cellulose (string like material) that is easy to process. Separation and production of amorphous cellulose is done chemically at room temperature in less than 3 hours. Once separated into their individual components, we are looking to maximize the value of each component for the production of biofuels and biochemicals in addition to using chemicals produced from the biomass process as a reducing agent for the production of iron powder (ie. steel).

We note that from a lab perspective aqueous ammonia is used in the process generating the need for a fumehood. We are also looking to use the technology to significantly reduce the cost of CO2 capture and compression for long term sequestration of CO2.
